I liked it better when we didn't know if Earth survived or not. I just felt like the solution to Ryland's food issue was too easy as well, "just eat the taumeba!" I think the ending would've worked better had it been more vague. I also did not like the final chapter at all. If Weir wanted Ryland to be a loner character, I think he could've done a better job portraying it. He had and made multiple friends throughout the book. I didn't know Ryland was supposed to be a loner no friends type.

He goes to save Rocky, not just because he's his friend but he says Rocky was his only friend. I liked the choice of Ryland going back to save Rocky, but I feel like the reasoning could've been better implemented throughout the book. I feel like from the point where Ryland and Rocky separate to the end was extremely rushed. It reminded me a lot of Arrival and I liked that a lot. I loved the relationship between Ryland and Rocky, and I really liked how the majority of the book wasn't dedicated to solving the astrophage problem but instead to them learning how to communicate. I was more emotionally invested in this story. It is similar to The Martian, especially the main character, but I feel like it is improved over The Martian. I just finished Project Hail Mary last night and I loved it.
